Episode 4 – Data Experiments & More

We’re four episodes in now, and I’m really excited about this series of interviews I’m doing. Last time, I talked to David Radloff, co-founder of Clarity Campaign Labs about how campaigns model turnout and party preference – and how campaigns put those models to good strategic and tactical use. We also talked a lot about one of the more frustrating parts of horse-race coverage – and that’s how media covers “time series” data, that is, how survey respondents answered the same question over time. I’ll do a subsequent post about this, but you’ll appreciate his perspective on that.

So it made sense to talk next to Amelia Showalter, co-founder and CEO of Pantheon Analytics, former Director of Digital Analytics for President Obama’s re-election campaign. She joined me to talk about the use of data experiments by campaigns to drive donations, volunteerism and turnout in elections. We also discuss the art of redistricting and the importance of local knowledge, and the way vote by mail has evolved, both as a partisan issue and a true driver of voter participation.
